So, this will sound obvious, but my favorite thing is skiing. That’s why we originally purchased our home and why we (at least I) come up from the Boston area so often. If you have never skied Jay, and if you are coming when there is a bunch of snow, you are in for a treat.
Additionally Jay has recently changed their uphill policies–on most days if you have the stamina and the equipment uphill travel via skinning can be very rewarding. Just please check the new “earn you turns” policy.
Jay isn’t the biggest ski area in New England but in my opinion we are the best. Skiing at Jay is as tame or as ridiculous as you want to make it. It’s up to you.
But, alas, not everyone skis or snowboards. What else is there?
Snow Sports
- Snowshoeing is welcomed and there is an extensive, well marked trail system that interweaves with the cross country trails. If you notify me in advance I will endeavor to make snowshoes available at the unit. Jay is also one of the northernmost spots on the Long Trail, which can be accessed via snowshoes.
- Cross country skiing is also available at the Nordic Center and seems pretty extensive (admittedly this is from someone who does not cross country ski so I do not have a lot if info on this).
- Sledding is a blast and we leave sleds either in the ski locker or next to front door-just return them. Sometimes there seem to be more sledders on our run after the lifts close than there were skiers during the day!
Indoor Activities
Jay offers one of the most diverse choice of activities both winter and summer of any place in the east. From the largest indoor water park east of the Mississippi to ice hockey at the arena, the movie theater, climbing walls, then to the usual assortment of bars, restaurants, a terrific pizza restaurant, Jay really has the chops to keep you entertained when either the weather doesn’t cooperate or when your legs are burning and you need a day off. (fact: the reason we bought Jay many years ago was because the weather was lousy on MLK weekend and to alleviate her boredom my wife looked at real estate while I skied. The result of course was this townhouse).
Jay also runs many other activities from weekend apres ski parties, a winter (and summer) concert series, visits to the Kingdom Brewery (a true mom and pop operation) and other activities.
Rather than trying to go through all the choices, it would be best to go to the Jay Peak activities section (they have much better editors than I do).
